Abstract
The efficacy of cefamandole was evaluated in two groups of thirty-eight patients for prevention and treatment in the musculo-skeletal infections.
Group I consisted of twenty-one patients with 13 cases of large surgical procedures and with 8 cases of fresh open fractures for preventive measure of infection, and Group II of seventeen patients with established bone and joint infections for therapeutic measure.
The duration of cefamandole administration for Group I has varied from use at the time of surgery to continuing use for 2 days or longer, and for Group II at least over 10 days.
Cefamandole nafate was given intramuscularly or intravenously in doses of 3-6 grams daily in equal doses at 6-8 hrs intervals. Pediatric doses were 50-70 mg/kg per day given in equally divided doses at 6-8 hrs intervals.
The clinical results of the study lead to the conclusion that cefamandole is a highly efficient broad-spectrum antibiotics which enabled prevention and treatment in bone and joint infections.
Cefamandole was well tolerated in all cases.
